If the sun beats on your uncovered windows all day long, it forces your air conditioner to work way harder than it has to. Shade south- and west-facing windows with awnings, shutters or sun screens, and you can reduce the amount of heat that comes through by up to 77 percent. Another option: Plant leafy trees to filter the sun. Choose a variety that sheds its leaves in the fall so the sun can shine through your windows in the winter when the extra warmth will give your heating system a break.
